Richard Mosse
Biography

Richard Mosse is a photographer and filmmaker who brings a cinematic eye to urgent, overlooked stories.

Using unconventional photographic technologies, Mosse has documented environmental devastation in the Amazon, mass migration across Europe and the Middle East, conflict over rare earth minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the occupation of Saddam Hussein’s palace complexes in Iraq, illegal immigration along the U.S.-Mexico border, the missing persons crisis in the post-war Balkans, and other complex global crises.

His immersive video installation Broken Spectre examines deforestation and environmental destruction in the Amazon Basin through specialized scientific imaging technologies. Incoming, a 52-minute video artwork co-commissioned by the Barbican and National Gallery of Victoria, explores the mass migration of asylum seekers from North Africa and the Middle East into Europe and earned Mosse the Prix Pictet. Infra, documenting armed groups fighting over rare earth minerals in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, earned him a Guggenheim Fellowship. He received the Deutsche Börse Photographic Award for The Enclave, an immersive 16mm film exhibited in the National Pavilion of Ireland at the 55th Venice Biennale.
