Opportunity
Vast in both ambition and geography, Desert X is a non-profit organization that produces contemporary art exhibitions in desert locations. With nature as its backdrop, the setting provided a unique challenge: create a cohesive identity across a vast and varied landscape. Every element, including the logo, signage, and marketing, had to feel rooted in the environment, reflecting the raw and expansive character of the region.

Solution
X Marks the Spot
A distinctive identity inspired by the utilitarian graphics of the desert—road signs, lines, and textures from the environment—combined with industrial elements like the markings found on freight trains and shipping containers that pass through the valley. The ‘X’ acts as a treasure map marker to highlight installations hidden throughout the valley, while event signage conveys a raw, unpolished quality that mirrors the landscape and deliberately avoids overly polished visuals.

Impact 

  • Launched Desert X and transformed it into a global exhibition platform
  • Originally intended as a biennial event, the 2017 and 2019 exhibitions paved the way for annual exhibitions
  • Inaugural event attracted 200k visitors, and doubled in 2019 to 400k
  • Over 5 billion media impressions in 2025
